Latest-generation eco-friendly aircraft to serve the route
As of today Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) is flying from Sofia to Zurich again. The first scheduled flight since 2017 was welcomed at Sofia Airport with a water salute by the Swiss Ambassador, Deputy Minister of Tourism Irena Georgieva, executives at the Lufthansa Group and the management of the capital’s airport. H.E. Raymund Furrer welcomed the resumption of flights, which will allow travellers to get to know Bulgaria and Switzerland and to learn about local cultural and historical traditions.
Flights to Zurich are scheduled twice a week on Mondays and Saturdays. They will be operated with Airbus A220-300, which meets the latest standards in terms of cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness. It is quieter and its fuel consumption is less to one quarter than other similar aircraft.
“We are delighted to link Sofia and Switzerland this summer season. The expansion of the SWISS operation in Sofia further adds to Lufthansa Group’s local portfolio and demonstrates our commitment to the market,“ Peter Pullem Head of Sales Central, Eastern Europe, Russia, CIS and Israel of the Lufthansa Group says.“ Apart from attractive connections to Zurich as leisure or business destination SWISS also offers optimum connecting services via its hub to London as well as to Boston and New York,“ Pullem adds.
“We are extremely pleased that SWISS has resumed scheduled flights to Zurich in such a difficult period for the entire aviation sector, which continues to impact traveling globally. The SOF Connect team is actively working with the airlines and the Ministry of Tourism to continuously enrich the variety of destinations and make Bulgaria a desirable choice in all seasons. Our joint relationship with Swiss Airlines is part of our long-term program to improve air connectivity from Sofia and to reopen or open new routes,” said Jesús Caballero, the airport’s CEO.
