Hello new look!

Follow the transformation of Sofia Airport here.

Sofia Airport is Bulgaria’s largest international airport. It serves flights to over 80 international and domestic destinations all year round. Since April 2021 the management and development of the airport has been handled by SOF Connect S.A., a company of the global investment fund Meridiam and backed by the expertise of Munich International Airport.

SOF Connect – the operator of Sofia Airport is implementing an ambitious transformation programme for the airport, which aims to turn it into a successful project contributing to the economic and social development of Sofia and the country.

The vision for Sofia Airport is its transformation into a 5-star regional airport by 2028. Read more about the airport’s strategy for the next 5 years

Complete transformation of T2

More check-in counters

Over the next year and a half, the number of check-in counters to increase from the current 34 to 52. More check-in counters mean improved airport capacity, more convenient and faster passenger service.

To make room for the new counters, the domestic area will be relocated, allowing passengers bound for Varna and Burgas to use the terminal’s eateries, shopping areas and other amenities.

More efficient security screening

The number of security checkpoints for passengers and hand luggage will be increased from 6 to 11, saving time and adding much-needed convenience to mandatory pre-flight airport procedures.

Improvements for border control

The increased number of security checkpoints necessitates the same for document checkpoints, which are carried out by the authorities of the Border Police General Directorate.

Completely new shopping areas

In 2022, entirely new shops will be built covering a total area of nearly 2,000 m2, which are designed as modern, convenient and functional functional „walkthrough“ areas where selling Bulgarian and global brands are sold.

One of the world’s leading operators, Dufry – selected after an international procedure, will be responsible for the airport shopping areas for a period of eight and a half years.

Dining and Restaurants

In 2023, Terminal 2’s nearly 3,400 m2 of restaurants will be completely reorganised.

A complete transformation of the available space is planned, and among the novelties will be an entirely new area with restaurants, bars, fast food outlets to present international and traditional local cuisine, an outdoor terrace with beautiful view and a dedicated smoking area as well as many other amenities for passengers.

Business lounges

The refurbished Aspire Business Lounge opened in mid-2022. It is operated by ground handler Swissport and offers a comfortable setting for pre-flight time. WiFi, TV, food and beverage are just some of the amenities, complemented by a designated smoking area, which is the only one in the border area. The lounge is located on level “0” after passing through security and passport control.

Going forward, Level +2 of Terminal 2 will be completely redeveloped to provide guest lounges with their own security checkpoints.

New passenger boarding bridges

3 additional passenger boarding bridges will be added to the 7 existing ones. They will be able to serve wide-body aircraft, which is in connection with the diversification of flight offers from and to Sofia Airport with new more distant destinations.

Parking

The overhaul of the covered public parking lot is already underway, with 3 temporary lots and 1 permanent parking lots to be constructed during the renovation.

New Terminal 3

In 8 years Sofia Airport will have a new terminal, which is in line with SOF Connect’s commitment to the Bulgarian state. Its construction will take place in several phases, which will initially provide a phased increase in the capacity of the existing Terminal 2 in line with passenger traffic forecasts.

The future of Terminal 1

The concessionaire’s strategy for a 5-star regional airport is inseparable from the new functionality of Terminal 1.

Terminal 2 – once its complete redevelopment is complete, will take over the air traffic, while the almost 70-year-old Terminal 1 building will have a new purpose – a location for business and VIP aviation. This concept includes preserving the authentic look of the terminal as part of its cultural and aviation heritage.

New destinations and new airlines

SOF Connect is actively engaged in the development of the flight network and in attracting new airlines to offer more opportunities for travel to and from the capital’s airport. Negotiations have already started to launch nearly 100 new routes and a strong argument is the competitive airport charges which, combined with the country’s geographical location, cultural and historical assets – all these are a powerful incentive to grow the flight network.

New logo and new visual identity

At the beginning of the summer the capital’s airport presented a logo that combines tradition and new horizons.

The message the logo conveys is new horizons on the way to transforming the capital’s airport into a 5-star regional airport. In line with the new visual identity, a complete rebranding is underway.
