Covid-19 continues to impact air traffic
Passengers
Passengers at the capital’s airport in the first month of 2022 were down 41.3 percent compared to the pre-pandemic year 2019. A total of 309,504 passengers were handled during the past period, a decrease of 218 000 compared to pre-Covid-19.
Passenger traffic on international scheduled services has also almost halved – nearly 45% compared to the first month of 2019. The number of passengers travelling on domestic flights also saw a significant decline of 35% in January.
Air traffic
Aircraft take-offs and landings at Sofia Airport in the first month of the year reached 3,529, with a 24.2% decrease compared to 2019.
Cargo
The volume of cargo and mail shipments handled in January decreased by 8.3% and amounted to 1,538 tonnes.
The Covid-19 pandemic continues to be the main negative factor hindering the recovery of air traffic, according to Sofia Airport.
